Making the Transition to Adulthood

There comes a day when you know it is time to grow up. For some people, that happens while they are still in their teens. Others move through the twenties and beyond without making that choice. Putting off the inevitable sets you back, and while you may not see it now, you may come to regret your decision. You will watch your peers become successful in their careers, purchase real estate, and have the time and money to travel. The good news is, becoming an adult doesn’t have to take all the fun out of life. In fact, responsibility also gives you freedom.

Finish Your Education

Whether you started college and dropped out, or you never attended, finishing your degree is a solid first step in becoming an adult. It is certainly possible to build a successful career without attending college, and trade schools are a great choice for many people. If you are floundering in your career, or you have never moved on from your high school job, a degree can provide the fix you are looking for.

It is normal to be concerned about the financial aspects of attending college. Educating yourself about the options can help you feel better about the decision to return to school. In addition to grants, which do not need to be repaid, you can finance your degree through loans. Private student loans allow you to borrow money for all of the costs related to your education, including transportation and living expenses. You can take out private student loans without a cosigner, which allows you to take on the responsibility of the loan.

Be Responsible with Your Finances

It is normal to treat yourself now and then, splurging on something you want after completing a big project or meeting a goal. However, if you find you are treating yourself regularly, it may be time to rein in your finances. Being responsible with your finances means more than paying your bills. Putting aside a little money from each paycheck allows you to build a safety net for the unexpected. It can be challenging to come up with extra money during early adulthood. Your income may barely cover expenses. Look for ways to cut spending, and be satisfied with putting away a small amount for now. By building the habit of saving money, you can avoid lifestyle creep and build savings as your income increases.

Take Care of Your Health

When you are young, you can get by with a lot of negligent behavior and still have the energy needed to get through the day. You may feel you manage well with just a few hours of sleep, without exercise, while avoiding healthy eating, but the truth is, your performance probably suffers in ways you don’t realize. Productivity, focus, and other factors are difficult to quantify, but there is no question they are affected by poor health habits. This is not the time to skip routine healthcare appointments either. It is easy to put off annual exams, dental visits, and therapy for financial reasons or just out of convenience. However, these routine appointments catch small problems before they dramatically affect your life.
