A Statement by Jenna Ben-Yehuda, CEO of Truman National Security Project/Truman Center for National Policy; John Driscoll, Chairman of the Board of the Truman Project, and Stephen Bailey, Chairman of the Board of the Truman Center
Today, President Trump’s supporters attacked the US Capitol with the intention of disrupting the peaceful transfer of power, the foundation of our democracy. This violent insurrection, incited by President Trump, constitutes an egregious attack on American democracy. In response, Truman calls for Trump’s removal from office either by the 25th Amendment or impeachment.
“A President who came into office bragging he would defeat ‘American carnage’ and ‘elevate law and order’ has, in the sunset of his presidency, precipitated a violent insurrection at the most important symbol of our democracy, the US Capitol,” said Ben-Yehuda.
“Today’s images of mobs freely roaming the Capitol chambers – and the stark contrast with the heavy-handed treatment meted out to unarmed protesters during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations – will reverberate for years to come, and undermine US power and influence abroad,” said Ben-Yehuda.
“The breach of the Capitol Building is a national security crisis taking place within our own borders,” she continued. “Those of us who have served this country overseas know exactly what we are seeing here: an insurrection, directed by a leader about to lose power, that is attempting to subvert the popular will. He must be removed.”
