Daily Beast: Officials at the Department of Justice are considering charging Capitol rioters under a law typically used to prosecute members of organized crime, two current and former officials told Reuters.



Under the law, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, prosecutors must prove a pattern of criminal activity that rises to the level of racketeering as well as an ongoing threat.

The statute was created to go after Mafia leaders and has also been used to prosecute the mastermind of a planned attack on the George Washington Bridge and United Nations. The DOJ reportedly hasn’t made a final decision about whether it will use the statute.

More than 170 people, including members of the far-right groups the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, are facing charges for taking part in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. and from Newsweek:

A Capitol staffer found that the office panic buttons had been “torn out” while she hid from pro-Trump insurrectionists swarming the building during last week’s siege.

Sarah Groh, the chief of staff of Democratic representative Ayanna Pressley, said she joined other staffers taking refuge in the congresswoman’s office as the protesters flooded in.

Groh told The Boston Globe that the group barricaded the door with furniture and water jugs that had piled up during the pandemic before she pulled out a gas mask.

A Capitol staffer found that the office panic buttons had been “torn out” while she hid from pro-Trump insurrectionists swarming the building during last week’s siege.

Sarah Groh, the chief of staff of Democratic representative Ayanna Pressley, said she joined other staffers taking refuge in the congresswoman’s office as the protesters flooded in.

“Every panic button in my office had been torn out—the whole unit,” she told the newspaper, adding that the team could come up with no rationale as to why. The staffer said that she had used them before and they had not switched offices since then.

  1. It’s becoming more and more obvious that 1/6 was well-planned, well-financed, and allowed to happen. Just as 9/11 was blamed on Arabs with boxcutters, the band of crazies who stormed the Capital will eventually take the fall. Just as with 9/11, the real perps will skate.

  2. Gordon, of course that idiots downstairs are the only one who all are going to prison, I can’t imagine when you believed such thing as than someone else would be truly arrested
