There is a name for this – “Digging your own grave”

[ Editor’s Note: Trump has left what may be a stain not only on American politics, but the Republican party as a whole, including its voluntarily captive media organs who report hogwash on major political events with the ease of flushing a toilet.
Anything they do not like they just throw out and replace with a version they like better, like it was some sort of gambling casino where the more you bet, the better your chances of winning and no fear of losing. They appear to have no concern for any negative blowback.
Many of us had come to believe that the radical Trumper supporters like the militias were a fringe. But the polls coming out now show that those that believe the election was stolen is way beyond the numbers of the hard line Oathkeepers and Proud Boys and militias.
What I underestimated was how a huge number of pro law enforcement Republicans, not known for being crazy, have no problem at all dismissing the professional law enforcement, prosecutors’ and judges’ decisions that the Big Lie was really a big Lie. This has developed into a new scam, that the Capitol Riot was staged to blame on Trump.
The absence of any evidence for their claim does not impede their narrative at all. What is scary for journalists is that we have to accept that a large part of our audience is not concerned about an accurate description of current events.
What hits their hot buttons is to have what they want to believe reinforced, and social media is their hall of mirrors and, also, drug of choice.
Hence there is no penalty that would remove the liars from the political scene. In that respect, Trump seems to be their pied piper
As for the opportunistic Republican Congressmen who support Trump with no questions asked, they are planning to bet red and black with one chip at the roulette wheel. If Trump goes down in the investigations over the next few years, that will still leave them with the support they want from the Trumpers who will jump aboard their own ships for 2024.
I fear we are going into a non-stop campaign mode, a social punishment one or two steps back from death… Jim W. Dean ]

A January poll conducted by the American Enterprise Institute’s Survey Center on American Life found that half of Republicans agreed with the assessment that antifa was “mostly responsible” for the Capitol attack, while only 15 percent blamed Trump for inciting the invasion.
Another January survey, conducted by The Washington Post and ABC News, found that 56 percent of Republicans held Trump blameless for the riot.
…“I don’t think there’s any question that Democrats never want to let an opportunity go to waste to try to attack conservatives, and so they want to try to besmirch, smear, demean all conservatives in the name of a handful of people who did the wrong thing on Jan. 6,” said Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.).
…On the afternoon of Jan. 6, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, who said he spent $450,000 on rallies contesting the results of the election said, “There were probably some undercover antifa people that dressed as Trump people,” a claim that went unchallenged, if not supported, by host Chris Salcedo.
…“I have never seen Trump rally attendees wearing helmets, black helmets, brown helmets, black backpacks — the uniforms you saw in some of these crowd shots,” host Laura Ingraham said.
