Daily Beast:Analysts for ShotSpotter, a system that uses microphones to identify the location of gunshots and alert police across America, “frequently modify alerts at the request of police departments—some of which appear to be grasping for evidence that supports their narrative of events,” according to court filings reviewed by Motherboard.

In one instance involving a murder in Chicago, ShotSpotter initially classified a suspected gunshot as a firecracker. But a ShotSpotter analyst allegedly overrode the algorithm and “reclassified” it as a gunshot. Later, another ShotSpotter analyst reportedly altered the supposed shot’s coordinates to a point closer to where a suspect’s car had been seen in surveillance footage.

In another case, ShotSpotter analysts overruled the algorithm—which initially classified a sound picked up by microphones as helicopter rotors, not gunshots—at the request of Rochester, New York police. The suspect’s conviction was later tossed after a judge questioned the reliability of ShotSpotter’s technology.

Any claims of accuracy by ShotSpotter, the company admitted in court, were generated not by its engineers but by its marketing team. ShotSpotter is reportedly used in more than 100 U.S. cities.  read more..

  1. Suspicions confirmed, as every aspect of American life is being/been tainted by ubiquitous corruption & the “If I don’t steal it, some one else will” ethos… Are we doomed to total slide into dishonesty & crime in all aspects of everything until bankrupt and in total disfunction…????

  2. Yup, good issue. Another one is the control of the 911 database of calls. How many sheriffs depts are in charge of the emergency call data base ?

The shot spotter, is a major tool, for the cities to actually be on top of things when it goes sideways, but alternatively a tool for courts and if that has to be used in a manipulative way, you have more innocent people piling up for cases by the Innocence Project. It can be used to get someone, either for retribution or simply, “getting the person” without doing the leg work. A lazy mans framing tool. Some police work is very very hard, and takes long view dedication, and skipping steps is wrong. Nobody wants to work anymore, and that is across the spectrum.

    • If moral is low for police, and it is,… then it should be taken as a harbinger that yes, we are finally curbing the assault mentality, and the people will address the money driven policing by the courts and states, that are purely politically driven, and have no basis in actual policing.
So technically speaking,.. the police should know they are in a good place, and it is a good time for good people to enter law enforcement if that is their calling. The future police will help the past protestors.

    • David, you have a vision overly optimistic about future, the only thing will have in that future is more “customers” for private prisons system convicted with fabricated evidence extracted and faked of own prisoner smartphone or the mics, cams and phones everywhere…
