While work-from-home is all cool and flexible, it comes with certain impacts on eye health. Prolonged exposure of your eyes to the direct rays of the computer can cause a host of health complications in the long term.

The simplest option to reduce this strain would be to spend less time in front of your computer, which might not be possible for you.

If you have to spend at least eight hours in front of your computer, follow these tips to reduce the negative impact of the screen.

  1. Wear glasses- Blue-light glasses can protect your eyes from the harmful rays of your computer. You can pick any frame that you want, at leading stores offering discounts for glasses, and start wearing blue-light-blocking lenses when you work. These glasses are safe, and you can use them even if you do not have an eye prescription.

2. Check the prescription- If you wear glasses, ensure that the prescriptions are correct. Wearing incorrect glasses would increase the strain, and if you use computers in addition to that, it can lead to severe eye issues. If you are facing any issues, consider upgrading your glasses. Also, buy more than one pair of glasses for the best results.

3. Maintaining the right posture- Your posture and eyes are connected. Thus to reduce eye strain, the first thing that you should do is maintain a good posture. Sit in such a way that your computer is placed on a slightly downward gaze. Also, slouching your keyboard can create muscle tensions and cause ocular issues.

4. Change the lighting- If your work environment is dark, it will create more strain on your eyes. Opt for the right type of lights and position them properly to reduce the strain.

5. Increase font size- If you squint while trying to read something on your computer screen, then increase the font size. It will reduce the unnecessary stress from your eyes and prevent them from getting strained.

6. Blink frequently- It is a simple trick but is very effective. It is an involuntary function, but when you are in front of a computer screen, you should make a conscious effort to blink more often. Not doing so might lead to dryness, irritation, and visual discomfort. It would lead to a lack of concentration, which would hamper your productivity as well.

7. Take more short breaks- You should practice the 20-20-20 rule to reduce the strain on your eyes. The rule says that every 20 minutes, you should look at a distance of 20 feet away for 20 seconds. You can step away from the computer or get up for a glass of water. You can also look out of the window and focus on a distant object located at a distance from your computer screen.

8. Set up a no-tech zone- If you are working on your computer throughout the day, it would be bad to go to bed with your blue-light emitting smartphone, scrolling through social media. So once you are done for the day, truly unplug from any such electronic device. Spend time reading books or interacting with your family.
