The Russian government has backed China’s reported test of a hypersonic missile, saying that the test did not breach any of Beijing’s international obligations, posed no threat to Russia, and followed similar moves by the US.

In a briefing on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that, “China is developing its arms systems within the framework of its international obligations.”

“In no way does Russia [itself] break its obligations with regards to arms control and we only take measures aimed at ensuring our own security amid actions that the United States takes under their missile defense program,” Peskov added.

Kremlin’s support came following Washington’s expression of concern about Chinese and Russian hypersonic missile technology. The US claimed that Beijing had tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic glide weapon earlier this year. The Financial Times first made the allegation about China in a report on Saturday, citing “multiple sources familiar with the test.”

However, China rejected having tested hypersonic missiles, with its Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian telling a media briefing on Monday that the test had been a routine one related to reusable spacecraft technology.

“This was not a missile, this was a spacecraft,” he said, adding, “This is of great significance for reducing the cost of spacecraft use.”

China, Russia, and the United States are the main countries working on hypersonic missile technology, which features the development of projectiles that can travel five times faster than the speed of sound.

    • It appears, the more countries acquire it, there are less countries ready to engage in war, as MAD prevents their positive outcome. Who are those that are members of nuclear countries invited to teach the others about it. Today, countries are not allowed anymore to acquire nuclear weapons, allthough US overseas Military bases have them stashed all over the planet.

    • Yes, we can all agree on that. BUT, getting USA to act on that is more difficult than moving a mountain! AUKUS is the latest edition of arming Australia with nuclear subs.

  1. The U.S. with its fixation on hegemony is so occupied with micromanagement of what every state says and does that it is in constant conflict with too many states that really have no significant influence or danger 2 American interests. This has let peer competitors get ahead in exitentially critical areas of defense. Now is not the time to up tensions with them. These problems need 2 be solved by negotiation not carping and turning Australia into a proxy thermonuclear armed hired guard. All this threatening behavior will only compelling them to up their game more. Sometimes I wonder just how dangerous having the profit motive of contractors and their lobbyist pushing U.S. decisions on how to deal with its adversaries can get.

  2. Gordon Duff-
Dear Sir, I know I am only one of those low IQ Grunts you might have been reading about lately, but I have tried very hard to educate myself (GI Bill) and through
reading non fiction books such as “The History of Russia” by Professor Nicholas V Riasanovski.
I am currently reading ” Chinese Thought: From Confusius to Mao Tse-Tung” by Professor Herrlee Creel.

I feel that these countries will always be demonized by America until more people are educated like I educated myself and by paying atention to You and VT.
How many times have we heard “You know Gordon Duff
was correct about that and he knew about it years ago” !
Every time I think of you I reflect on a quote from George Orwell:
“The Further Society Drifts From The Truth,
The More It Will Hate Those That Speak It.”
