VT Damascus: Tom Duggan, VT Correspondent, Dead

It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the death of my good friend Tom Duggan.  Tom died suddenly but peacefully at the home he was renting near Newcastle in the last 24 hours. Tom had come back to England some months ago for medical treatment, but his heart has truly always been in Syria where he has lived since 2012.

Tom has been a tireless supporter of Syria and of the Syrian people, reporting from the front lines and telling the stories of the people and the realities on the ground. It was a joy to stay with him in Damascus on several occasions and to travel across Syria with him, including to Aleppo, Deir Ezzor and Palmyra.

He will be deeply missed by many. Our hearts go out to his dear wife, Fourat, to whom he was devoted, and all the family in Damascus. May he rest in peace. (Andrew Ashdown)
