Sputnik: The missile was developed as a replacement for the ICBM R-36M2 (NATO Reporting Name SS-18 Satan). It is expected to be effective in destroying enemy strategic targets around the globe with kinetic impact energy and without the use of the nuclear warhead.

Russia conducted the first successful launch of the Sarmat super-heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) (NATO reporting name: SS-X-29) from the Plesetsk spaceport, the Russian Defence Ministry has reported.

“Sarmat is the most powerful missile with the biggest hitting range in the world. It will significantly strengthen the combat power of the Russian strategic nuclear armed forces,” the Russian Defence Ministry said.

The missile performed as expected throughout all stages of its flight, the ministry added. The Defence Ministry said that the Sarmat ICBM has received an upgrade, increasing the number of warheads it can carry, as well as support for new types of warheads, such as hypersonic gliders.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Russian armed forces with the successful launch of Sarmat. He noted that the new ICBM will ensure Russia’s safety and will make those threatening it “think twice”.

This truly unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of armed forces and will secure Russia against external threats,” Putin said.

The president stressed that the missile is built using elements and components manufactured in Russia, which will speed up its mass production. Today’s launch is the first in a series of test trials. After they are complete, the Sarmat will enter production.

Russia properly notified the United States of its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test launch, and Washington does not deem it a threat to its security, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

“Russia properly notified the US under its New Start treaty obligations that it planned to test this ICBM,” Kirby said.

The specifications of the Sarmat missile are not entirely clear, but it is expected to carry between 10 and 15 warheads capable of destroying strategic objects, even without the use of nuclear explosives.

In 2018, President Putin confirmed that a hypersonic glider, Avangard, had been developed as an optional warhead for the Sarmat ICBM. Travelling at speeds above Mach 10, Avangard is believed to be capable of penetrating existing air defences.

  1. Great news! The Beautiful Rocket: the apotheosis of modern technical and engineering thought. Many thanks to our wonderful and talented scientists, designers, technicians, engineers, and all those who forged the nuclear shield of my beloved homeland!
With these “buses” we can sleep peacefully.

    • The tactical and technical characteristics of the Sarmat were partially disclosed for the first time at the Army-2019 forum. The range is a record 18 thousand kilometers, the length of the rocket is 35.5 meters, the diameter is three. The ICBM will deliver from ten to 15 warheads to the target, depending on their power (from 750 kt each). The RS-28 is designed for hypersonic guided Avangard combat units accelerating in the atmosphere from Mach 15 numbers.
“Sarmat will replace the Voivode complex, created back in the USSR. Everyone recognized his high combat effectiveness. But the new missile has much wider capabilities: with a weight of over 200 tons, there is a short active flight section, which makes it difficult to intercept by missile defense means. More range, number and power of combat units.

  2. Sitting here betwixt Teapot Dome Naval Reserve and The China Lake Naval air station I am comforted that, should WW3 be started, Russia does not blow up civilian infrastructure like NATO does.
So, should the Lake Isabella Dam be blown up I know that Americans will be the perpetrators.
Yet, that would flood Kevin McCarthy’s hometown.
I feel safer than I did in 1956 when Miss Stone had us all crawl under our desks and cover our heads.

    • Oh yes, I remember this silliness in 2n or 3r grade, and looking up at the wall of windows that would be gone in a hearbeat, and wondering why we were not being taken to the basement or even the hallway. And I knew even then that the radiation would kill us anyway.

    • Jim, it made sense if you were far from the epicenter of the explosion. Shards of glass and concrete from the shock wave cause great harm. So under the desk you can escape from the murderous glass fragments. In the USSR, no one drove me under the desk in school lessons, but I knew how to determine the approximate distance to the epicenter of the explosion, where to run during an alarm (we knew the location of all bomb shelters in the city), I knew the size of my gas mask, I knew all the stages of radiation dispersion and the properties of the rays formed during the explosion itself, their exposure time and the ability to penetrate through different materials. I was 12 years old, I think.

My reply to erenus: Whenever NASA finds the original Rocket Design that had supposedly sent Armstrong to take his first big step on the moon – Hahaha!
