Putin continuously makes it clear that he envisions Russia as a Christian country.

In 2014, Putin called for the restoration of Kremlin’s historic Chudov (“of the Miracle”) and Voznesensky (Ascension) monasteries both of which were destroyed by the Bolsheviks.  He also wants another church destroyed by the Bolsheviks in the Kremlin to be rebuilt.

While the project is currently on hold until a scientific research is completed on the sites, the intent itself is symbolic.



The Kremlin is both the political and historic center not just of Moscow but of Russia.  By calling for the restoration of these Christian buildings Putin repudiated the Soviet legacy with its atheist ideology and its record of anti-Christianity and reaffirms Orthodoxy as the heart of Russian culture.

A key element of Putin’s worldview is not just his commitment to the Russian Orthodox Church as an institution, but also his admiration for three 19th and 20th century Russian Christian philosophers—Nikolai Berdyaev, Vladimir Solovyov and Ivan Ilyin, all of whom he often quotes in his speeches.  Russia’s regional governors were even instructed to read the works of these philosophers during their 2014 winter holidays.

The key message of these philosophers is of Russia’s messianic role in world history and of its need to preserve itself through Orthodoxy and restoration of its historic borders.

Studying the causes of Russia’s 20th century tragedy, Ilyin wrote:

“The Russian revolution is a reflection of the religious crisis we are living through now, an attempt to establish an anti-Christian public and state system thought up by Friedrich Nietzsche and economically and politically realized by Karl Marx. This anti-Christian virus was exported to Russia from the West…..

Losing our bond with God and the Christian tradition, mankind has become morally blind and gripped by materialism, irrationalism and nihilism.”

In Ilyin’s view, the way to overcome this global moral crisis is for people to return to “eternal moral values”, which he defined as “faith, love, freedom, conscience, family, motherland and nation” but above all “faith and love”.

“To make Russia great again the Russian people should believe in God.  This faith will strengthen their minds and willpower.  It will make them strong enough to overcome themselves.”

Ilyin believed in the religious gift and talent of the Russian soul.  In his words,

“Russian history is all about morality triumphing over difficulties, temptations, dangers and enemies.”

For their part Solovyov and Berdyaev argued that the historic mission of Russia is to lead the way to human unification.  Russia would transcend secularism and atheism and create a unified spiritual kingdom.  “The Russian messianic conception,” said Berdyaev, “always exalted Russia as a country that would help to solve the problems of humanity.”

In his biography entitled “First person“, Putin says the first line in any Russian law code should be moral values and that Russia has to be concerned as much with its spiritual position as its geographical one.

To understand Putin’s vision of Russia, his views on spirituality and his study of Christian thinkers such as Ilyin, Solovyov and Berdyaev, must be taken into account.

  2. Since everyone here has dropped their opinion…I know many think I’ve lost my mind when I say that what we are seeing now is the same thing we’ve been seeing for a very long time. I view this time as a time of extreme change, albeit not in the same vein as most. The religious part of any doctrine is very dangerous. It leads people to believe they are ‘exceptional’, that their actions and goals are as well. It leads one to believe they are on good terms with god. This is the US mindset after WWII. Russia is now the vehicle for this. This is the time when Russia is supposed to carry the ball. It is all predetermined. By who? The same people that gave us the holier-than-thou US. When the majority of the people fell in line, then the corruption of ideas began…and here we are now. The subject of homosexuality is a very strange case. It is seen as a human failing (poor choice of words), yet one can see it in nature. Anyone who was brought up on a farm knows this. Are these animals sinners, evil or conspiratorial? This religious bent by the Russian state can be a force for good, but only at the expense of some who have to be marginalized or demonized. What happens when what happened in the west, happens there? If Russians think it cannot happen there, then this is only proof that it not only can happen, it can happen even easier that they think…with the backing of the religious legions. This demonizing is happening now in Ukr.

    • Everyone here knows a gay or black person. Ask them if they support what’s being done in their name. You may be surprised. Societal attacks are to foster certain reactions and provide vehicles for deception/division. A government that pushes memes undermines natural society. What is happening now in Russia is planned. The coalescing of national identity around religious dogma is exactly what happened in the west. Watch movies/TV programs from the 40’s to the 60’s…the ensconcing of Christian Evangelism is quite visible. Are Muslims, Buddhists and others given actual equality in the west? No…because the west considers itself to be Christian. Now the Christian values arising as a force in Russia need a unifying enemy, one that can be demonized that no one will publicly defend. Homosexuality is now conflated with Nazi’s, child trafficking, molestation and demonic possession in Russia and by those who support her religious revival. That gay people predominately hate pedophiles is completely disregarded…as is the fact that the majority of pedos are in fact self described as straight. Homophobia as a tool and ‘measure’ of morality is powerful…it implies righteousness and piety, a favorite tool of religion. How long before Russia becomes the righteous west? The fact that Christianity, Judaism and Islam are all Abrahamic should also not be ignored. Those that believe one has to read a book, attend a church or follow dogma to know god have been deceived.

  4. God Bless Putin – he is the only defender of Christianity at this stage (not so for Pope and many other church leaders). What Putin says makes very good sense, Although west may not agree but the real world which is based on God’s moral laws and His universal nature perfectly agrees. As we witnessed in recent years, the whole thing came crashing down with the introduction and acceptance of gay and lesbian marriage “rights”. Now those living in the West will argue using their “exceptional” sense of reality that what I am writing here is completely wrong etc. Little do they know that it is millions of people like them that want to vote God out of the universe and be free of moral laws. This re-building of Sodom is why the world is so badly messed up.

    • I recommend for every interested person a journey to South-East-Asia to visit the capitals of 3 nations/states. First Thailand, 2nd the Philippines, 3rd Indonesia. Thailand is dominated by Buddhists, Philippines by Catholics and Indonesia by Muslims. Alone, during a night in Bangkok, nothing will happen to you, in Jakarta or Manila your survival is not guaranteed, probably a wake-up as a dead man. In Thailand families are big & most of all families have a gay person or a in other gender costumed person. It is accepted, no one is harmed. What we do in the West is different. We discredit heteros. We annihilate women’s rights in sports and similiar tools. We should think about quotations by sexual focus in politics.

    • This is seen from a historical point of view not correct. Before the reelection of Yeltsin in 1996 a communist leader was in front. Gennadi Sjuganow had a promo-budget of 3 Mio. US$. The Clintons sent their election-promo-team to Moscow with a 500 Mio. US$ budget to support Yelstin, who had forecasts of 8%. We all know the result of this election. And in the south of Russia Mr. Putin accepts islam.

  15. A good and correct article. About 180 nationalities live in Russia. What unites us is the Russian mentality. The way of thinking. I am completely on the side of spiritual values. And it’s great that my president understands this. A month ago I was in Karelia on the island of Valaam. Putin goes there every year. This is one of the most powerful spiritual centers of the Russian Federation. America and the EU have abandoned true Christian values and believe in LGBT and other devilry. We in the Russian Federation are categorically against this. A few years ago I described society in the USSR here. I saw it myself and was a part of this society. And I was the happiest child (1985-1990). America lived like this in the 1970s. What happened now? Why did the West abandon moral and family values? And we will never betray our moral compass. And we are ready to fight for basic human values with weapons in our hands.
