Archbishop Fulton J Sheen was an interesting man, as was anyone brave enough to say these words in his era:

“I confess myself to a deep and profound love for the Russian people”

Sheen was famous for declaring that Stalin’s days are numbered a week before Stalin died mysteriously of a stroke, but did you know he was a not-so-secret Russophile?

At the height of McCarthyism, Sheen declared that Communism may be an ideology in Russia, but that doesn’t make it Russian. According to him, Russians themselves are people with hearts and souls, and Communist party members make up less than 3% of the Russian population (then 200 million people).

Moreover, we had a field day seeing him hammer down a fact that we’ve been screaming about for ages. That fact he so magnificently drives home, is that “communism is not a Russian philosophy” and that it came from the “western world, principally from Germany”.’

Indeed, communism’s founder was a German, Karl Marx, who envisioned the philosophy for implementation in Western Europe, not in Holy Russia.

As Sheen explains, communism is not only anti-Russian but very alien to the Russian people; these are a people he openly says he wishes to defend.

He claims, interestingly enough, that every Catholic priest of the time prayed daily for Russia.

I only knew the Russian Church Abroad to do such a thing. He says all this while wearing the cross of a Russian bishop. The cross was brought to him by a friend, and he also claims he serves mass with a Russian chalice. (I admit I feel a bit uneasy about this, especially if the chalice had been used previously in Orthodox divine services, I am horrified by the thought of it being used outside the Church)

However, it is clear from his words that he just wants a Russian cross close to his heart when he speaks about Russia.

Finally, in his program, the Archbishop contrast the beliefs of two giants of their era, communism’s founder Marx, and the legendary Dostoyevsky, a Russian writer of profound faith.

Sheen explains how 40 years before WW1, the prophetic Dostoyevsky predicted how moral chaos would lead to the plunging of civil society into mass chaos.

Dostoyevsky’s words prove to be eerily true, especially in our times:

“Liberty today means doing whatever you please.”

Dostoevsky warned that because men have lost all moral decency, you will find them in the future selling their true freedoms for a tiny bit of security.

Sheen, inspired by Dostoyevsky, compared communist Russia to the man whose daemons were cast into swine by the Lord, which later ran themselves off a cliff, and drowned in the sea.

Personally, I wonder if these daemons possessed porks didn’t merely drown, but sailed westward, away from Russia, into a strange new land, to infect it with their poisonous errors.

Nevertheless, Sheen ends his speech with the thunderous words.

“Russia will sit at the feet of Christ and learn His gospel.”

This reminds me of the legendary words of Saint John of Kronstadt who said:

“Russians must remember what Rus’ (Russia) is. It is the footstool of the Throne of God!”

  1. Millions of Europeans came to what is now called the USA on the run from such things as the Spanish Inquisition, the 30 Years War, and all the various pogroms that happened in almost every European country. The last thing the descendants of these folks want is for the USA to be turned into a theocracy by some crazy so-called Christian sect. The US Constitution says very clearly, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

    • Sheen was a media genius way before his time. He got on the national airwaves before any of the evangelical Bible thumpers and captured a fair number of non-Catholic viewers. And, BTW, he was right about many of the “affairs of men”. In his mind, the truth was the truth and the rest was equivocation bullshit. One of a kind.

  2. An important part of the Message of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 was that if people didn’t stop offending God so grievously, “Russia will spread its errors throughout the world,” and She said that “various nations will be annihilated.” She asked that we pray the Rosary daily. The Fatima visionary Sr Lucia in her last public words before being “disappeared” by enemy infiltrators and replaced by an impostor, said that Our Lady told her that the Rosary has been given more power in our times, and can overcome any problem. It compensates for the greater power given to Satan in our time, as Pope Leo XIII learned in a mystical experience he had in 1884, after which he composed a Prayer to St Michael the Archangel and ordered every priest to recite a shorter version of it at the end of every Low Mass. The homosexual Globalist asset and papal pretender Paul VI (1963-78) did away with it and also foisted an unprecedented revolution on the Church, changing almost everything. Now he’s called a “saint” by the apostate counterfeit church occupying Rome and the visible structures of the Church.

“In the Third Secret of Fatima it is foretold, among other things, that the Great Apostasy in the Church will begin at the top.” (Cardinal Ciappi )

“Even if Catholics faithful to Tradition are reduced to a handful, they are the ones who are the true Church of Jesus Christ.” (St Athanasius)

“Is it tradition? Ask no more.” (St John Chrysostom)

    • “He [Satan] will set up a counter-church which will be the ape of the Church, because he, the Devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the Antichrist that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ.” (Fulton J. Sheen, Communism and the Conscience of the West, 1948, pp. 24-25

“Rome will lose the faith and become the seat of the Antichrist. The Church will be in eclipse. The world will be in dismay.” (Our Lady of La Salette, 1846)

Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824, whose visions inspired much of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ) had seen in her visions a “counterfeit church of darkness” occupying Rome at some time in the future, in an era when she also saw the priest facing the people when saying Mass.

The famous stigmatist and miracle worker Padre Pio (d.1968) “around 1960,” as Fr Gabriel Amorth, later chief exorcist of Rome, recalls, told him, “You know, Gabriele? It is Satan who has been introduced into the bosom of the Church and within a very short time will come to rule a false Church.”

In 1963, at the beginning of Paul VI’s reign, Padre Pio told Father Luigi Villa, whom he encouraged to fight against Freemasonry in the Church, “Be brave, now…for the Church has already been invaded by Freemasonry!” and then stated: “Freemasonry has already made it into the slippers of the Pope!”
