Russian forces have practically surrounded Artemovsk in the DPR, the ring is closing. This was announced on March 3, 2023 by the adviser to the acting head of the DPR, Yan Gagin. According to him, the Russian military is already in the center of the city.
On the night of March 2, the Ukrainian command ordered the Armed Forces of Ukraine to immediately leave Artemivsk and move to another place. During the retreat, the fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine blew up almost all the bridges on the outskirts of the city. It is assumed that the destruction of the bridges should delay the advancing assault troops of the Russian Federation.

Order on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Artemivsk
On the night of March 2, the Ukrainian command ordered the Armed Forces of Ukraine to immediately leave Artemivsk . According to the commander of the army with the call sign Magyar, the Ukrainian military will have to move to another place.
“On the night of March 2, the Birds of the Magyar unit received a combat order to immediately leave Bakhmut (the Ukrainian name of Artemovsk. – Approx. REN TV ) to a new place ,” the Ukrainian commander said in his Telegram channel.
” If necessary, they will retreat strategically, because we are not going to sacrifice all our people just like that ,” an adviser to the President of Ukraine said.
On February 28, Alexander Syrsky, commander of the ground forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine , admitted that an extremely tense situation had developed for the Ukrainians in the Artemivsk area. According to him, Russian-trained assault detachments are attacking in the Artemovsk region and are trying to break through the defenses of Ukrainian militants.
Russian assault troops are fixed at Artemovsk
Michael Knowles, a columnist for the British edition of Express , believes that Volodymyr Zelensky is aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to fight for Artemivsk. Ukrainian Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrsky explained that Russian forces have thrown into battle the most trained assault units that are trying to break through the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Artemivsk.
According to Igor Kimakovsky, adviser, acting head of the DPR, the military personnel and artillery of the RF Armed Forces are very competently working on the outskirts of Artemovsk. All routes are under Russian fire control, including the road to Chasov Yar.
Losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Artemovsk
Servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine participating in the battles in Artemivsk said that the Ukrainian army loses one or two companies daily in the city. They believe that the Ukrainians should leave Artemivsk.
“If a company lives here for one night, then you need to prepare positions and roll back a little. Because when we lose two companies every day,” say the Armed Forces.
“A whole battalion in a week! My vision of the situation is this: it’s not worth it. We need to prepare positions, roll back, align the line (contact. – Approx. REN TV )” , – said one of the Ukrainian military.
In addition, Igor Kimakovsky, adviser to the acting head of the DPR, reported the loss of 70% of the UAF militants near Artemivsk. According to him, if the Ukrainian command will transfer troops to Artemovsk, then only the fighters of the defense.
“That is, they will send for slaughter those units that are not important to them ,” Kimakovsky emphasized.
At the same time, the adviser to the acting head of the DPR believes, the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Artemovsk “will hold out to the last.”

“The Ring Shrinks Relentlessly”
Military expert Vasily Dandykin said that “quite tough battles” are currently taking place in Artemovsk, and in this regard, the words of the Ukrainian military cannot be a reliable source.
“Maybe some unit received such an order (on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Artemovsk. – Approx. REN TV ), but there are thousands of people, maybe up to 10 thousand. Now there is a lot of disinformation from that side. I think they can cover up their withdrawal plans ,” the expert explained in an interview with Izvestia .
Dandykin noted that the ring around Artemovsk “is inexorably shrinking”, and thus the Ukrainian command wants to save its people.
Military expert Viktor Litovkin, in turn, expressed the opinion that the order for the retreat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Artemovsk could indeed mean the withdrawal of troops and their subsequent regrouping.
“Moreover, they are not just retreating. They are retreating and at the same time leaving part of the units that will cover their withdrawal. And they are blowing up bridges so that Russian troops do not enter Artemovsk through them. But, I think, after they will leave Artemovsk, then they will be able to transfer their units to another direction. Naturally, they will first let them rest, reformat them , “Litovkin said in an interview with TV channel.
According to the expert, the Armed Forces of Ukraine can send their troops to the Zaporozhye sector and Kherson. In this regard, says Litovkin, the main task of the Russian army is to prevent the Armed Forces from leaving the city, since it is not beneficial for the Russian Federation for Ukraine to strengthen its defense systems.
Why is Artemovsk important for the liberation of the DPR
The interlocutor of REN TV explained that Artemivska is important because railway and transport arteries converge in this city, which allow the supply of fuel and lubricants, ammunition and reserves to Ukrainian troops.
“Besides, Artemivsk is part of the Ugledar arc. This is the arc between the ends of the ledge of the Donetsk People’s Republic, which is part of the territory of Ukraine. And on this arc there are very powerful engineering defense systems, especially since there are salt caves and salt tunnels under them, where and ammunition, and bitter lubricants, and even hospitals are there, you can hide combat systems there.
