The first group of evacuees from Mariupol’s embattled Azovstal steel plant reached this Ukrainian-controlled city Tuesday afternoon local time, after weeks of failed efforts.

Another 46 people escaped the day before from the territories adjacent to the plant.

“We knew about the corridors from the radio, but we couldn’t get to them, they wouldn’t let us out."

Putin agreed to the participation of the UN and the ICRC in the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal, Stefan Dujarric said.

Servicemen of Russia and the DPR evacuated more than 80 residents of Mariupol, including 14 children, out of the basements of residential buildings located near the contact line using infantry fighting vehicles BMP-1 and armored personnel carriers, necessitated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine firing on civilians.
